The sun has dared to show its big shiny face, spring is in the air and, unbeknownst to me until five minutes ago, last month my novel was longlisted for the Retreat West First Chapter competition which I’m really thrilled about.

I have been writing this novel for exactly a year now and the end of the first draft is finally, thankfully, in sight. But as anyone who has ever tried to vomit a hundred thousand plus words out of their brain and then shape them into something palatable will appreciate, it is a lonely, treacle-wading, soul-searching task. However it is thanks to the kind supportive words of beta-reading chums and surprise boosts like this that spur you to keep on keeping on, putting one word after another.

So thank you, Retreat West, you have put a spring in my step.
